A Chat with Master Chris Chan
Hi Chris, Thank you for making time to join me in this month Interview. Chris is the Managing Director of The Golden Space Singapore. He is also the first Master in Singapore initiated by Master Umesh H. Nandwani.
Hui Lee: You were once the youngest GM in a listed company in Singapore. And you were doing very well in the IT industry before this. What makes you switch from corporate to a holistic wellness business?
Chris: I made the switch to keep a promise to myself that I will commit my life to become who I really am. To accelerate the process, I chose to devote my time and energy to be a facilitator in The Golden Space and to own and run the business as part of a collective group. I thought then that the pressure will “force” my original self to “show” up. It did not quite happen that way. I realised 2 personal experiences. One, faith is when I put my foot forward into the invisible unknown, the path then becomes known and the ground supports my foot. Two, I was the biggest benefactor of my career switch, bearing testimony that if I am well, all will be well. I am good to the people I am helping if I am clear and well myself.
Hui Lee: Hahaha… Life is always full of surprises, isn’t it? Could you elaborate more on what does The Golden Space meant for you? And how does being a Managing Director of The Golden Space help you being your authentic self?
Chris Chan: The Golden Space is a community (much resembling a family) where close relationships are formed via common experiences as students, friends and committed members. The community communicates and lives up our aspiration to be part of the solution for a better world. Being part of the management, I received support and criticisms of my commission and omission—experiencing the full spectrum of emotions. To realise what I am not, I experience what I think I am, then realise they are not me. I am what is left.
Hui Lee: Can you share with us more on your aspiration?
Chris Chan: I aspire that we experience life with all the avenues available to us. Each avenue is not a discovery but already the living and experiencing life itself. When we do that, we will not need to remind ourselves to be positive. We will naturally be. Our relationships and interactions will transform. Each conversation will an opportunity to inspire. I partner with HR practitioners in the business. These transformations have great implications for the workplace. One avenue is that it does not need to be the place of stress. Another avenue is that people can really enjoy their careers and time at the workplace because we do not set restrictions and boundaries around us. We can be free to enjoy our work.
Hui Lee: What will be the 3 tips you have for our reader so that they can be free to enjoy their work.
Chris Chan: One, Stop looking for your yourself. Two, this moment is for the living. Three, be open to new experiences.
Hui Lee: That is one powerful advise of creating an impact in one’s life. Next month, The Golden Space will be launching Positive Energy Solution Lite Journey. And you are one of the main practitioners for Work Journey. Could you kindly share with the readers, how does the journey work and how it could help people who sign up for Work Journey.
Chris Chan: The work journey is for people who are starting their careers or looking to refresh themselves. This journey gives you clarity about what you are doing at the workplace and why you do what you do. We aim to get you excited about your work, put you into a new proverbial suit and have you out there influencing, inspiring and transforming other lives too.
